Wisconsin Asks Contractors To Look Into Labor Abuses

Four Companies In Question Supply Police, Fire and Prison Clothing

July 1, 2008  Associated Press

Gov. Jim Doyle's administration is asking four state contractors to look into whether their suppliers make goods at sweatshops.

Administration Secretary Michael Morgan sent the request to Bob Barker Co., Williamson-Dickie Manufacturing Co., Blauer Manufacturing Co. and Fechheimer Brothers Co.

All four companies supply police and fire uniforms and prison clothing.

Morgan's letter said the state expects the companies to "work with your suppliers to ensure that any labor rights and human rights violations are corrected, and conditions for workers are improved."

He sent the letter in response to a recent human rights group's report on factory abuses in South America, Central America and Asia.

The four companies did not immediately return calls or e-mails from The Associated Press seeking comment.
