Bill needed for fair labor standards
December 28, 2007 Rutland Herald
I
am a senior at Brattleboro Union High School and I have been a part of
CLEA (Child Labor Education and Action) for the past three years.
Through my work with CLEA I have learned about labor abuses that exist
around the world. With the knowledge I have gained comes a passion to
create positive changes.
Last year several CLEA members and I
drafted a bill for the state of Vermont. The bill would give Vermont
the opportunity to spend its money on apparel that was manufactured in
a responsible way. Rep. Sarah Edwards of Brattleboro decided to sponsor
our bill. I am helping continue our campaign this year, in hopes of
passing the bill in January.
The purpose of the bill is to set
up fair labor standards that must be upheld in factories where Vermont
apparel is made. Vermont will be joining the effort started by
Sweatfree communities to create a state and local government Sweatfree
Consortium. Currently, six states and 38 cities are on board with the
campaign.
When we go to the State House it would be great to
show a wide range of support for our legislation. If groups would like
to endorse our campaign you can contact us at buhs.clea(at)gmail(dot)com.
